JMPD arrests 211 motorists in one week for drinking and driving

Driving under the influence remains a serious offence, and motorists are urged to drive responsibly.

As part of ongoing high-visibility operations and targeted anti-drunk-driving enforcement, JMPD officers arrested 211 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol between August 10 and 16.

Drunk driving continues to be a major factor in fatal road crashes, serious injuries and reckless road behaviour. JMPD officers from various operational regions, including specialised units, were deployed throughout the week to target non-compliant drivers.

“Driving under the influence is a serious criminal offence that endangers not only the driver’s life but also passengers, pedestrians, and other road users. The JMPD urges all motorists to take personal responsibility. If you plan to consume alcohol, arrange alternative transportation, nominate a designated driver, or utilise e-hailing services,” said JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fitlha.

High-visibility roadblocks, roving stop-and-search operations, and targeted DUI enforcement are said to continue across all regions of the City of Johannesburg to promote road safety and compliance.
