Addressing the public, TETA CEO, Maphefo Anno-Frempong said it is essential for the African child to acquire skills so as to prepare for the world of work and/or start businesses in the future in order to contribute in both social and economic development.
“Our investment of R8 million in the South West Gauteng TVET College is a strategic step towards positioning it as a centre of learning excellence. With cutting-edge tools and equipment we are not just equipping learners theoretically, but practically, enabling them to see, feel, touch, and understand the engines of their trade,” said Anno-Frempong.
She added that by implementing this project, they are not only tackling the lack of qualified welders but also giving young people the tools they need to become the go-to experts in fields like construction, manufacturing, shipbuilding, aerospace and more.
Present at the opening ceremony to formally inaugurate the South-West Gauteng TVET College Welding Trade Test Centre was Dr. Blade Nzimande, Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation.
Dr. Nzimande said the opening of the state-of-the-art centre in Soweto is part of their response to the community of Soweto who requested them to build and upgrade their Post-school Education and Training in South Africa (PSET) infrastructure to respond to the skills needs of the community.

“This Trade Test will test for knowledge, skills and competence in welding work. It involves theoretical and practical demonstration of knowledge and skill.
“This will lead to a Trade Test Certificate awarded which is usually required by employers before they will employ or advance a trainee and allow him or her to do work at a certain level,” said Nzimande.
Nzimande added that their vision is to remain focused on providing an integrated, coordinated and highly articulated Post-School Education and Training System for improved economic participation, skills development and social development of the youth and the entire community in the country.
