Local school welcomes educators from the USA for cultural exchange

This was the second team to visit Emshukantambo Secondary School. The first team of teachers from the USA visited the school last year.

Emshukantambo Secondary School had the pleasure of hosting teachers from the United States of America for a visit that was to bring an exchange in learning strategies between South Africa and the United States of America.

On July 10 the teachers were allowed a chance to see how Emshukantambo teachers gave out their lessons to the learners.

They were able to go see the Grade 11 and 12 Mathematics, IsiZulu and Sesotho classes.

This visit occurred because the school’s principal is part of a team known as Global Teacher Institute and Teach South Africa.

This organisation gives an opportunity to young people who would like to become teachers or educators to go overseas and study education.

The school already has two of those teachers known as Future Leaders.

The school’s Deputy Principal, Vuyiswa Mdletye expressed her joy about the opportunities offered by the Global Teacher Institute and Teach South Africa.

“We’re very blessed and honoured to have them visit our school especially because it is their second time visiting.

“It’s really pleasing to see our learners go to other countries because they represent Emshukantambo Secondary School and that means they will put our school on the map.”

The teachers even got the opportunity to see the garden that the school has and go to the kitchen where learners get served food. This is where they learned about the feeding scheme and even tasted the food.

Monserrat Jaramillo, a Grade 2 teacher from San Francisco, USA spoke on why she was visiting the school for the second time.

“I love seeing joyful learning, I love seeing teachers who communicate and it’s not all about the teachers but it’s really about the learning. I loved seeing the Math class and seeing how the teachers continued to communicate with the class as he is teaching,” said Jaramillo.

“I truly enjoyed eating the food from the feeding scheme, it was delicious and healthy. I really appreciated having beans, I know that’s a really good source of protein.

“As a teacher I know very well that hungry students cannot learn so the fact that learners can even get breakfast at school is good.”

The RCL President of Emshukantambo Secondary School and Grade 12 learner, Lwazi Radebe said, “It was very delightful to teach other people about how we speak and learn as Africans. It’s a very beautiful thing to see other people being interested in our cultures and traditions.”
