Meadowlands roads in flames after days without electricity

Aggravated community members close all roads in Meadowlands and burn tyres as they do not have electricity.

Residents of Meadowlands, Soweto, are infuriated after being left without electricity for an entire day, prompting a protest that blocked major roads, including Modise Street.

Residents told Urban News they had been experiencing scheduled load reduction from 17:00 to 22:00 over the past few weeks, but since June 10, the power has been off entirely.

The outage has also forced several businesses to close.

Vusi Ngcobo, owner of Fuze Fuze liquor store in Zone 3, said the power cut has had a severe impact on operations.

“We have to close shop early because our tills rely on electricity. We also return to warm drinks, which results in a financial loss,” Ngcobo said.

Ward 40 councillor Tumelo Madiba confirmed he has been in contact with Eskom, which stated the outage is due to an overload at the Mofolo substation. Technicians are currently working to restore the supply.

Eskom said an estimated time for restoration will be communicated in due course.
