According to a police report, officers were alerted by radio control to a “dead on arrival” case at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. Upon reaching the hostel area, the attending officer was guided to the deceased by a nurse.

It is reported that the boy, whose identity has been confirmed by his next of kin, drowned while swimming in a dam situated behind the hostel.
