Protea Glen residents get guidance on illegal evictions

The meeting’s key advantage was having legal advisors on hand to guide residents affected by illegal evictions and highlight the job opportunities available for the youth

Addressing the ongoing illegal house evictions, Ward 135 PR Councillor Lawrence Baloyi hosted a follow-up housing meeting on February 07 at Protea Glen EXT 11.

Stakeholders, including Legiscore Legal Consultants and Advisors (PTY) Ltd and All-In-1 Emergency, were part of the meeting.

Speaking to Urban News, Baloyi said the meeting’s advantage was having legal advisors on hand to guide residents affected by illegal evictions and to explain what usually causes these situations.

“Most people affected by illegal eviction issues are children living in their parents’ houses after their parents have passed away. Often, these children end up being evicted because their parents did not leave a will.

“That is why it was wise to have legal advisors present at today’s meeting, to guide residents and provide clarity on their rights,” he said.

Baloyi stated that he was disappointed with the SAPS for not attending the meeting.

He said this was the third time the station commander failed to attend, and that leaves the residents without the clarity they need from the police, who are often present during these illegal evictions.

During the meeting, the emergency company All-In-One promised to provide 5 000 job opportunities to the youth of Protea Glen. They also assured that all beneficiaries of the program would not only receive certificates but also be placed in jobs.

An attendee at the meeting, Thembi Thusi, said the meeting was very beneficial for them, as many of the important pieces of advice they needed were provided.

“As a parent, attending this meeting was one of the best decisions I’ve made. I now understand what I need to do to ensure the safety of my home and children.

“I also understand the importance of having a will document and a trustee, so this meeting was very educational,” she said.

Thusi added that she hopes the job opportunities that will be provided to their ward will help reduce crime and drug-related issues.
