Jabulani Mall celebrates Mandela Day by giving back to Safe-Hub
The initiative went beyond providing essential resources, as Jabulani Mall staff also spent time with the hub's beneficiaries and prepared lunch for them.
In celebration of Mandela Day’s 67 Minutes and as a show of appreciation for the community, Jabulani Mall, in collaboration with Pick n Pay Jabulani, donated essential resources to Jabulani Safe-Hub on July 17.
The initiative went beyond providing essential resources, as Jabulani Mall staff also spent time with the hub’s beneficiaries and prepared lunch for them.
A clean-up campaign also formed part of the initiative, helping to maintain a clean and safe environment.
Safe-Hub is a fast-growing social enterprise with a mission to create collaborative spaces where young people can access the care, resources and opportunities they need to thrive.

Operating in underserved communities across South Africa and internationally, Safe-Hub combines sport, education, health and economic development into a single, place-based model designed to drive long-term systemic change.
Jabulani Mall marketing coordinator Simphiwe Zondo told Urban News that every year, as part of the mall’s Mandela Day programme, the mall identifies a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that is already making a meaningful impact in the community and partners with it to support its work.
“We identify an NGO within the community where we operate because the mall is in the heart of Jabulani.
“Together with our tenants, we come together as one family to show our appreciation by donating whatever the organisation needs,” she said.

She explained that once an organisation has been identified, it is asked to compile a wishlist of the items it needs most.
Zondo said the organisation guides the entire process to ensure the support provided is meaningful and relevant.
Stationery, blankets and sports kits for local sports teams affiliated with the hub were among the items donated.
Tenants including HomeChoice, Fastrack, Soweto Theatre and Hlanzekile Tets Catering Club, among others, worked closely with Jabulani Mall and Pick n Pay to help make the initiative a success.
Customer service manager at Pick n Pay Jabulani, Charmane Magoro, said supporting the community has always been a priority for the retailer.

“When the marketing team told us about the initiative, I decided we should come on board. As a store, we are always committed to helping and supporting the community wherever we can,” she said.
Safe-Hub marketing manager Babalwa Kaniki said the organisation was incredibly grateful for the generosity, partnership and shared commitment to creating a lasting impact.
She said Mandela Day serves as a reminder that meaningful change happens when communities come together in service of others.
“By celebrating Mandela Day at Safe-Hub, Jabulani Mall is helping to strengthen a space that supports children and young people every day of the year. From the community clean-up to supporting our sports teams and bringing local stakeholders together, this initiative demonstrates the power of collective action,” said Kaniki.

Kaniki said the contribution goes beyond a single day.
“It sends a powerful message to young people that their community believes in them, is investing in their potential, and is committed to building a cleaner, safer and more hopeful future together,” she said.
