Protea Glen woman celebrates Zulu umemulo ceremony at 21
The ceremony saw young girls dressed in traditional Zulu attire, singing and dancing to celebrate the occasion and honour the cultural heritage and family traditions.
Family, friends and community members recently gathered in Protea Glen to celebrate the umemulo ceremony of 21-year-old Reabetsoe Jobo.
Umemulo is a traditional Zulu ceremony that celebrates a young woman’s transition into adulthood. It is usually performed when she is around 21 years old and serves as a way for her family to honour her growth and celebrate this important stage of her life.
The ceremony saw young girls dressed in traditional Zulu attire, singing and dancing to celebrate the occasion and honour the cultural heritage and family traditions.

She said her Life Orientation teacher in high school once taught them about the importance of umemulo and respecting their bodies as teenagers.

She stated that the lesson had a lasting impact on her.
“My mind was always set on having umemulo when I turned 21 and remaining a virgin until then. Throughout my primary and high school years, I made sure I did not date anyone because I wanted to achieve my goal. I avoided anything that I felt could prevent me from reaching it,” she said.
Advising young girls, Reabetsoe encouraged them to respect themselves and their bodies, reminding them that love is not just about sex.
She said someone who truly loves them will respect their decisions and be willing to wait until they are ready, adding that loving and respecting their bodies is rewarding.
Reabetsoe’s mother, Malerata Jobe, said the family was proud to celebrate her daughter’s umemulo, as she had shown respect for her family and upheld their values.
“We are proud of our daughter, and we love her dearly. We are grateful for the respect she has shown us as a family, and we wish her a bright future filled with happiness, success and many blessings,” she said.
