Awareness campaign to tackle chronic illnesses

Alcohol is one of the greatest contributors to kidney failure and chronic kidney diseases.

The Open Eye Foundation is an organisation that was started in 2011 with the aim of bringing awareness to the public about acute and chronic illnesses, organ failure, organ donation and offering support to those who live with or suffer from chronic illnesses.

In 2011 Mosa Mphore was diagnosed with a chronic retinal failure, and after experiencing the life threatening state that chronic illness puts you in, he saw a need to prevent chronic retinal failure from happening to somebody else.

The best way of doing this is to give people information.

“We aim to break the chain of ignorance in black communities on health issues and ultimately instil a culture of a healthy lifestyle across the nation.

“Provide the opportunity for people living with acute and chronic illnesses to realise their full potential,” said Mphore.

Having realised how much the young are uninformed about chronic illnesses, Mphore decided to open an organisation aimed at teaching how to prevent or deal with life threatening illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases and chronic kidney diseases.

Mphore says the programme aims to enlighten the public particularly the youth because they are the ones who consume toxic and harmful substances such as alcohol which is one of the greatest contributors to kidney failure and chronic kidney diseases.

The organisation aims to do this through educational programmes such as the Kidney Health Education and Awareness Programme which will be first launched on November 23 from 10:30am till 4pm at Balfore Park Sports Ground in Moletsane.
