Feeding scheme inspires hope

The feeding scheme takes place on Mondays and Fridays.

Jacqueline Rhoda (45) is a longtime resident of  ‘Kersiedorp’ in Eldorado Park Proper who is hoping to address the socio-economic imbalances in the area through her feeding scheme.

Rhoda, along with volunteers Catherine Jacobs and Jean Watson rise early on Mondays and Fridays to prepare meals for 80 to 90 children and just over 50 adults.

She is assisted in this endeavour by her husband and Lady of Sizwe Feeding Scheme (LSFS) from the nearby informal settlement, Mandela Square. Ann Frans from LSFS assists them by sharing donated foodstuffs with Rhoda to ensure that those most affected have a meal on these days.

Meals are given to residents from 2:30 pm as this is when the school day ends and pupils returning from school are guaranteed a meal.

Rhoda says, “I do this because God has laid it on my heart to care for those who have nothing to eat and to share the little I have with them.”

“It is sad to see children coming from school and their parents are drunk while they don’t even have anything to eat.”
