Local Sensation: Just Robyn is taking center stage
“Truth be told, music has always been my first love."
Robyn Brophy (27) has emerged as South Africa’s latest local music sensation.
The entertainer’s debut single, ‘Moon Child’ (released in November 2016), introduced her talent to the South African music industry and solidified her identity as Mzansi’s, Just Robyn.
The artist’s vocal talent coupled with her national success as a professional dancer, has forged Just Robyn into the ultimate on-stage performer.
Just Robyn has roots in Eldorado Park, where she spent 2 years of her childhood, before relocating to Florida.
Before the launch of her music career, Just Robyn performed as a professional dancer.
The entertainer placed third in South Africa’s So You Think You Can Dance competition in 2013. Her talents in the entertainment industry also extend to modelling and acting, which saw her feature in the SABC 3, Afrikaans drama, Roer Jou Voete in 2015.
“Truth be told, music has always been my first love, but I’ve always been an introvert and not been able to express myself through my voice. So the best way for me to express myself with music was dance,” said Just Robyn.
The ‘Rooftop’ and ‘Bass Love’ songstress has found the confidence within herself to finally pursue and create music, expressing her story vocally. She explained that now being able to have audiences listen to her, is an amazing feeling.
“As I’ve grown over the years, I’ve gained confidence,” she said.
“Being able to get people to hear you, it’s really awesome,” she continued.
The title of Just Robyn’s latest album, ‘Mustard Seed’ (produced by Kimosabe) was inspired by the personal growth she’s experienced, both as a performing artist and a person and the growth and success she wishes for her young audience and supporters.
“I just want people to believe in themselves and to grow, to trust their talent and to trust what they were blessed with.
Hence, why I called my album ‘Mustard Seed’ because it’s all about growth and faith and believing in yourself,” said Just Robyn. Mustard Seed features a mixture of genres and musical influence, including traces of new jack swing, dancehall, R&B and Afrofusion.
“I’m still trying to find myself as an artist, so I’m experimenting with different styles at the moment,” said Just Robyn.
Overcoming the fear to finally produce music and establish herself as a recording artist within the entertainment industry has been Just Robyn’s greatest fear.
“That’s what being an artist has taught me, is to just not be afraid. Not to be fearful. You just have to be daring and go out there and look within yourself,” she said.
For anyone looking to pursue their passion in music, Just Robyn urges them to muster on. “Go for it, take what’s yours. Don’t be scared,” she said.
Her most recent performance took place at the Nedbank Cup Final, at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on June 24.
“That was insane! The vibe, everything and the people I worked with. It was just on another level. As someone who’s just starting out, I really am very privileged to have experienced that,” she said.
Just Robyn credits the support of her mother, son, fiancé and family for having been there every step of the way throughout her musical journey.
Mustard Seed is currently available for download from the iTunes Store.
