Sitting duck for now

With the water levels at the George Sutter duck pond subsiding further, metro parks has blamed a lack parts available for the pump and an incorrect quote from their tenders to fix the borehole pump.

Slow progress is being made in fixing the borehole and pump at the George Sutter Park duck pond.

The metro blames the lack of availability of parts for the borehole pump and an incorrect quote from one of their suppliers for the pump as part of the reason for the slow progress.

Initially the pump should have been fixed within two weeks, but more than a month later, the pump is still not working and the pond is getting drier by the day.

Project manager for the conservation department at the Springs parks department, Tsolofelo Hlatywayo, says it should only have taken two weeks to fix the pump and erect a fence around the pond, but their progress was hampered when they had problems with the quote for the pump.

Hlatywayo is unwilling to give a projected date for the completion of this project, but says that this is now top priority.

“We have finalised the quote today (last Wednesday) and we will start to resolve the problem with the pump, get it here, installed and in working order,” he says.

He adds that the metro is busy buying the two meter high, metro standard mesh fence to put up around the pond.

“The fence around the pond will prevent the majority of litter entering the pond and it is weather resistant to prevent rust,” says Hlatywayo.

In preparation of the pump being fixed and the erection of the fence, metro workers could be seen cleaning the park last week.
