For the past 10 years, under the guidance of band master Brian Boucher, the band has made Springs and their school proud by taking top honours at the nationals. This year they are going for their 11th title.
They are off to a good start as they made a clean sweep at the recent Springs Music and Arts Festival, taking top honours with their brass band ensemble and also winning the percussion section of the festival with their highly entertaining and original drumming group.
The band’s current drum major, Sheldon Reed, was named the SA Champion Drum Major in 2012, and also hopes to repeat his victory this year.
The band performs at many school events and local functions during the year, which helps prepare them for competitions.
But the biggest event on the band’s calendar, apart from the nationals, is the SBHS Brass Band Concert. This year it is taking place at the Springs Civic Centre on August 30 at 6:30pm.
The concert will give the band a chance to perform in front of a big audience, which will help prepare the members for the pressure they can expect at the nationals. The junior band members, who have never played in the nationals, will benefit most from this exposure.
The concert will not only showcase the talents of this group of young musicians, as past band members – who now work in the music industry – and other invited guests will also be performing.
The school urges Springsites to support the band and not miss out on their concert.
Tickets are available from the school, at a cost of R30 per person.
