Not trucking around
With an increase of calls for trucks to have dedicated lanes and travel times on the country’s national roads, Ekurhuleni will run a campaign from October 1 to 31 to test all trucks with a Gross Vehicle Mass of 3 500kg and more.
The tests will be free and will be done at the Brakpan, Boksburg and Kempton Park Testing Centres. The test is part of the Public Transport Month activities and will also include taxis and buses. The aim is to prevent fatal road accidents as a result of vehicle unroadworthiness.
“Ensuring that we have roadworthy vehicles on our roads is fundamental for us as a city because we have a high volume of heavy vehicles driving in and out. We also encourage public operators to continue on a regular basis to test their vehicles even beyond the campaign, ” says metro spokesman Sam Modiba.
He encourages public transport operators to book appointments and visit the designated testing stations to seize the opportunity to be informed about the roadworthy status of their vehicles so measures can be taken and deadly accidents be prevented.
“For the purpose of efficiency and due consideration of the time it takes to assess these vehicles, all the vehicles to be tested must be pre-booked,” Modiba says.
