Friend, husband and rotarian, saying goodbye to Allan Davies
Rotarian Allan Davies, died on on June 8, after a prolonged struggle with cancer.
He was born on May 31, 1942 in the town of St Helens, Lancashire, England and worked as a chemical analyst at Pilkington, then in the research laboratories and on to the development team in float glass manufacture.
He qualified as a graduate of the Institute Chemical Engineering and eventually moved to the head office to become a member of the international technical communications department.

He moved to the Springs factory in 1980 to manage the on-line technical department and later developed on-line training in the manufacture of float.
He worked at Pilkingtons until his retirement in 2000.
He joined Springs Park Rotary Club in 1988 and served as club president for one year.
Alan was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship with pin.
As a keen oarsman, he developed what was a hobby of rowing arbitration into studying and qualifying as an international umpire.
This led to umpiring all over South Africa then to Spain, Germany, United Kingdom and finally to the Athens Olympics in 2004.
Alan served on the South African Guide Dogs committee for many years where he and his wife, Wendy nurtured puppies for almost 20 years.
A hobby developed in recent years is the tracing of family members and their history and an activity that has given him and his friends enjoyment and relaxation over the years, is fly tying and fishing.
His work in Rotary is known to all Rotarians, particularly the years spent in organising and developing Ryla.
He leaves behind his wife, two daughters and three grandchildren.
His funeral took place last Thursday at the Trinity Methodist Church in Lodeyko.
