ATM bombing in Bakerton

The second guard arrived on the scene when the robbers had already left the scene

An ATM was bombed in the Bakerton Shopping Mall at 1am, July 18.

A security guard on duty noticed three men wearing balaclavas approaching him.

Captain Johannes Ramphora, spokesperson from the Springs police, says they grabbed the guard and tied him up with cable.

One pointed a rifle at him, while the other two walked to the ATM.

Ramphora says they put explosives on the ATM and the guard said although he was lying flat on his stomach, he could still hear the loud bang when it exploded.

The machine was damaged beyond repair.

“What the three robbers weren’t  aware off, is that the guard pressed the panic button,” he says.

A second guard came to investigate, but it was too late as the robbers had already left the scene in an unknown vehicle.

Anyone with information can contact the Springs police on 011 365 5719/20.
