Six friends summit Iron Crown

The six adventurous men, of which five are ex-Springs Boys' High School friends, recently summited the Iron Crown in Limpopo.

Burns Maclear (67), Koos Bouwer (65), Fred Ashton (72), Trevor Long (72), Dave Inggs (65) and Rob Beardsley (66) completed the climb of 2 126m in just under three hours.

The six men have been friends for over 45 years.

With only six peaks left, it leaves them with 16 556m still to climb.

Burns, a Morehill, Benoni resident, who initiated the challenge, says they are looking forward to the next climb on December 6.

He challenged his five friends to climb the nine highest peaks in nine provinces.

The six of them started their climb at 7.15am and through good but misty weather they summited.

On the descent they experienced rain, which complicated their descent a little.

“We walked and stopped and are happy to say we didn’t experience any problems,” Burns says.

He claims Hainertsburg, which is close to Tzaneen, is a beautiful place where nature can be experienced at its best.

The challenge to dare the nine peaks is in aid of the Northfield Methodist Church.
