The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) warns that motorists should be on the lookout for pedestrians.
Senior Superintendent Wifred Kgasago, spokesman of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department, says Ermelo and Welgedacht Roads next to Slovoville and Kingsway Road running through Lindelani are places in the area where motorists have to be especially vigilant.
Eight pedestrians lost their lives in Ekurhuleni from December 20 to January 5.
Kgasago says any accident involving a vehicle and a pedestrian will result in the pedestrian being permanently injured or dying, depending on the speed and specifications of the vehicle. Another important factor is what part of the pedestrian comes into contact with the vehicle.
Kgasago says the majority of adult pedestrian accidents take place between 6pm and 12am, with a greater incidence on weekends.
Small children who get hit when not supervised have a higher incidence during the mornings and afternoons.
“At times they simply slip from adults’ grip and run onto the road,” says Kgasago.
Kgasago requested both drivers and pedestrians to be cautious because an accident may have lasting effects on all parties involved.
“Most of this suffering is preventable. The first step is awareness. Once you become aware of the safety issues, you will start to see how you can be part of the solution. The next step is to speak up about it to your friends, family and to lobby legislators to bring about positive changes in your community and beyond.” he says.
Kgasago gave advice to pedestrians who have to walk, especially at night:
- Any freeway is taboo to pedestrians.
- Become more visible at night by using reflective gear or light colour clothes.
- Walk in well-lit areas whenever possible.
- Be extra cautious at intersections.
- It is key to look left, right and left again to ensure it is safe to cross.
- Don’t run when crossing a road, especially when trying to beat vehicles as you could fall and get run over.
- Know your place on the public road. Sidewalks exist for a good reason and a pedestrian who darts into the street without regard to safety laws can cause an accident.
- Be wary of common distractions such as talking on a cellphone, texting or shuffling through songs on a cellphone when on foot, especially when crossing the road.
- Know the rules of the road.
- Keep alert at night by visually scanning your surroundings. Pedestrians should stop at the curb to view the road before crossing.
- Never drink and walk.
