
A driver was nabbed by the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) doing more than twice the legal speed limit at 4.41am on Monday morning.
The 32-year-old man was clocked doing 128km per hour along Welgedacht Road between First Avenue and Grootvaly Road, a built-up area with the speed limit of 60km/h.
According to Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, the man claimed that he was rushing to a gym when he was stopped and arrested.
Seven more drivers ended up behind bars on the same stretch of road when they were caught doing speeds of between 109km/h and 98km/h.
They were arrested between 5am and 5.42am.
The eight arrested drivers were charged with reckless and negligent driving at the Springs police station and are expected appear in the Springs Magistrate’s Court soon.
They were all released after posting bail of R1,000 each.
