Making a fairytale dress for a woman who wants to look like a princess is the work of a dress maker.
Linda Broodryk has been a dress maker for the past 20 years.
Although there are courses in dress making at further education and training colleges, she decided one morning to start making dresses by herself.
She phoned her grandmother for guidance, bought a dress pattern, cut out the material with this pattern and sewed it together according to the instructions.
Making a dress, according to her, is much like putting together a puzzle.
She says to create a dress is a tedious job and explains creating the frills alone takes at least two-and-a-half weeks.
To be able to work with people is a good starting point if you want to do this job.
And, of course the passion for making beautiful dresses is what will make get up with joy each morning.
She advises that someone have mathematics and accountancy in matric because both subjects will be used when working as a dress maker.
Because Linda believes that every girl has to finish her school career with a opportunity to dress like a princess, it is the highlight of her work when she can make someone’s dream dress a reality.
She says her the worst day in the dress making business is when there is no-one that calls or enquires about a dress.
