Property and business owners are confused about what is taking place on a piece of ground at in Fulcrum.

Peter Jewaskiewitz, business owner from Argon Street, and Heinz Heissner who is working with him, are worried about the tons and tons of top soil that have been removed with a excavator and taken away with a tipper truck.

Their business is opposite the two erven, owned by Ekurhuleni.

Although a senior Ekurhuleni metro employee allegedly admitted to Peter that illegal mining was taking place on these erven, no one could tell him why the soil is removed or if the removal is in connection with the illegal miners in this area.

Peter says this piece of ground is full of holes where people were mining for years and it seems as if these holes are now being filled up.

Each person they ask about the situation has a different story, adding to Peter's confusion.

When the Addie visited to the site, accompanied by Heinz, we witnessed the excavator and trucks, as well as people who seemed to be digging for something.

These diggers were undisturbed in continuing their “work” only a few metres from the excavator and trucks.

Heinz showed the Addie a pond of sewage water where the sewer pipe had been broken for many years.

He says this pond had been causing a unpleasant odour in their area.

Themba Gadebe, spokesman of Ekurhuleni metro could not shed any light on the reason for the removal of the top soil.

He says although this particular portion of land is zoned as mining, the metro does not have any record that any mining on this property is done legally.

“The matter will be referred to EMPD for further investigation,” says Gadebe.
