The team emerged victorious in the CII Youth Reality Radio contest, winning R10 000 for the school.
The month-long challenge exposed learners to the world of radio, which asked participants from seven schools in the Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal region to come up with a radio programme promotion, act out a drama sketch on live radio and show their crafty debate skills.
The competition, hosted by the CII Youth Foundation, allowed learners to articulate their viewpoints on a range of topical issues affecting the world.
It was broadcast to millions of listeners on two radio stations and, apart from judging score cards, listeners were able to vote for who they thought was the winning school.
Prize money of R5 000 came from the CII Youth Foundation, and this was doubled by a Springs Muslim School board member.
An amount of R500 was given to each learner, while the top five students were presented with another challenge: to spend the remaining R7 500 in an innovative way.
In 2014, another debate team from SMS won the CII Youth Debate Competition, securing an iPad for the school.
English facilitator and debate coordinator Imraan Karolia says: “We believe in the talent of all our learners, these inter-school competitions allow students to unearth and hone skills they never knew they had.
“We encourage all learners to participate in different challenges throughout their schooling lives.”
