Police officers shot at with stolen SAPS pistol

A stolen SAPS firearm was found dumped in the Gugulethu/Everest informal settlement on Tuesday.

While conducting a routine patrol in the area Springs police noticed a suspicious-looking crowd of people.

Springs police spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora says when police approached the crowd, someone allegedly opened fire on the officers.

When the shooting stopped, officers searched for the gunman but only found the weapon.

Ramphora says the culprit must have dumped the firearm and fled when the crowd dispersed.

After checking the serial number of the gun, police discovered it was a 9mm pistol recently stolen from a police official.

The police are still investigating the case and urge the community to come forward to assist them.
