A cow lay slaughtered on the side of Hills Road this morning. Its unborn calf lay dead next to it.

These are the words of William Ntladi, spokesman for the Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS).

He says they responded to a call regarding an accident in Hills Road, Selection Park at 6.49pm on Wednesday.

When they arrived on the scene they found that a vehicle and a cow were involved in a collision.

“The crew on scene had to call the Department of Health, and SPCA for their intervention as the cow appeared to have died on scene due to the collision,” he says.

“The driver, and only occupant, of the vehicle escaped unharmed and as a result, she was not transported to hospital.”

Ntladi explains that when the accident scene was cleared up, many people came with knives to cut the cow up for its meat.

“They were equipped with knives and helped themselves to the animal’s meat, leaving the dead calf next to the slaughtered carcass,” he says.

Celeste Kleyn from the Springs SPCA says they went out to the scene after they were informed about the incident to see see if the cow was alive or dead.

“The cow was dead when we arrived and it is now the responsibility of the cleansing department to remove the carcass,” she said on Wednesday.

She added that they had tried unsuccessfully to contact the cleansing department on Thursday to inform them about the incident.

“The SPCA does not remove dead animals, when an animal is dead, we cannot do anything about the situation.”

Themba Gadebe, spokesman for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality says if the carcass is on council property, the Waste Management services will assist in the removal of the carcass.

He explains that the electronic telephone communication was off for the most part of the day on Thursday due to technical problems, hence the reason the Springs SPCA could not get hold of them.

“The carcass will be removed as soon as possible and will be disposed of at the nearest landfill site,” he concludes.
