The man and another male were accused of stabbing another man earlier that day.
Capt Johannes Ramphora, Springs police spokesman, says a mob of community members allegedly chased the pair at about 7pm, with one of the men seeking refuge in a nearby house.
Residents found him, dragged him outside and stoned him to death in Mzabalazo Street.
The man who was allegedly stabbed by the pair was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The other man managed to escape the mob.
