The male resident was in a back room of the house in Yvonne Street when three unknown men entered at 1.30pm.
Two of the men were armed with knives.
Springs police spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora says one robber grabbed the man, tied him up with cable ties and ordered him to lie under the bed.
“The suspects helped themselves to cake and custard and leisurely finished it before taking what they came for,” says Ramphora.
The suspects took a plasma TV, clothes, groceries and the man’s wallet.
Ramphora says the resident managed to free himself after the robbers left.
A case of house robbery was opened at the police station.
