He is currently under police guard.
The man’s arrest follows the fatal shooting of a man in the Gugulethu informal settlement.
According to Capt Johannes Ramphora, Springs police spokesman, the man was awakened in his shack by a knock at the door at 2am.
The man opened the door and noticed three men in his yard.
He assaulted one of them with a crowbar while the other two ran away.
Ramphora says the man turned towards his shack after closing the gate, and was then shot several times and collapsed at his door.
Neighbours called police and an ambulance, and paramedics declared the man dead on the scene.
Ramphora says the injured suspect then returned to the scene, where he was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
“As soon as the suspect is discharged from hospital, he will be taken to the police cells,” he adds.
