Tread carefully in this cemetery

It's been more than six months since the Ekurhuleni Metro gave assurance that the open manholes in the Geduld Cemetery would be attended to.

To date, nothing has been done.

In April, the Addie reported how a woman, who had visited her husband’s grave at the cemetery, unsuspectingly drove into a massive open manhole, concealed by leaves.

The woman and two of her friends were injured in the incident, and her car was badly damaged.

At the time, the metro said the problem would be addressed.

“The city’s roads department has placed an order to replace the missing manhole at Geduld Cemetery and red tape will be placed near the hole to warn the public and prevent damage to other vehicles,” metro spokesman Themba Gadebe said.

Upon a recent inspection at the cemetery, the manhole, which was again covered with leaves and unnoticeable, was not covered with the ordered cover nor cordoned off with red tape.

Other open manholes in the cemetery, also reported to the metro, have not been tended to.

The Addie is awaiting comment from the metro.
