Alleged ‘beer bribe’ gets investigated

The Ekurhuleni Metro will leave no stone unturned for metro officials who solicit bribes.

Following reports in the Addie, the metro says they are busy with an investigation into the matter of bribery.

This came after Billy Fraser brought it to the Addie’s attention that he was allegedly asked for a case of beer in exchange for fixing the streetlights that have not been working properly in his street for more than three years.

Fraser says he did not know what else to do as he was desperate to have the lights restored and gave in to the alleged bribe.

Themba Gadebe, spokesman for the metro, says the matter is being followed up to find the culprit.

“We do not encourage such behaviour among our maintenance teams,” he says.

He adds that more feedback would follow when the matter has been concluded.

If community members are faced with a similar situation, they can contact the metro’s anti-fraud hotline on 0800 102 201 to report such matters.
