Robbers take R35 000

Three armed robbers made off with R35 000 in cash after a robbery on the N17 on Tuesday.

Two friends were on their way to Johannesburg at 7am, to buy stock for their shop, when they noticed a silver vehicle overtaking them with three armed occupants pointing guns at them.

Springs police spokesman Amanda Greybe says the friends had R35 000 in cash; a plastic bag filled with R30 000 in cash under the driver’s seat of their vehicle and R5 000 in cash in the driver’s wallet.

The armed robbers instructed the two men to get out of their vehicle, but they tried to avoid the robbery by reversing the vehicle to get away.

After several attempts, two of the armed robbers managed to stop the men’s vehicle and one armed man got in the driver’s seat and drove off with the two victims still in the car. The driver of the silver car followed.

After the armed driver stopped the vehicle, he assaulted the two friends and demanded money.

The two friends handed over the R30 000 under the seat and the R5 000 in the wallet.

The robber got out of the vehicle, threw the vehicle keys into an open field and got into the get away car and fled.

Greybe says the friends found the keys and phoned the police.

A case of armed robbery was opened at the police station.
