Abdul received the award for best poster done by a learner from schools that entered the competition for the first time.
Learners had to design a poster of interesting facts about a hard metal of their choice and Abdul chose to design his poster around the metal cubic boron nitrate.
The University of Witwatersrand (Wits) hosted the major South African Research Network which consists of various disciplines including physics, chemistry, ceramics, chemical and mechanical engineering.
Abdul says, “I decided to personally challenge myself and work solo on my entry, I worked on it for about a month and had it checked by family members and my physical science teacher, Marie Liebenberg.”
Several professors attended the gala awards ceremony this year, including the Wits vice chancellor, Adam Habib.
Springs Muslim School was mentioned in the speech delivered by the dean of faculty, Deena Naidoo.
Marie says, “I am proud of Abdul and have always supported his endeavours, being placed in the top 15 and being acknowledged by the dean is a big achievement.”
Abdul is proud of his achievement and says that giving up was not an option.
“I’m more confident about my abilities and will treasure this wonderful achievement,” says Abdul.
