Participate in Stats SA survey
Fieldworkers from Statistics South Africa are currently visiting households in Springs and surrounding areas to carry out the Community Survey 2016 (CS 2016).
This is a large-scale survey that is being done between Censuses 2011 and 2021.
According to Lesedi Dibakwane, Statistics South Africa spokesman, the survey is aimed at collecting demographic and socio-economic information for local municipalities, for use in planning and decision-making at all levels of government.
She says the fieldworkers can be identified by official ID cards, which include their full name, a hologram image of the fieldworker, their ID number and a telephone number to call when in doubt.
“This needs to be produced when the fieldworkers visit the sample homes,”she says.
How does the survey work?
- It is a large sample survey covering towns, cities and informal settlements all over South Africa.
- The CS 2016 started in March and will be conducted until the end of April.
- Fieldworkers are visiting selected homes to complete an electronic questionnaire.
- Some households will be visited more than once if they are chosen to be part of the evaluation survey, that will be conducted to verify the quality of the information collected.
- This survey is not a census and will not count everyone in the country.
What will be asked?
- n Fieldworkers may ask questions related to the household and living conditions. Dibakwane says the community has a legal obligation to answer these questions truthfully.
- Demographics used in measuring population size, including age and sex, migration, fertility and mortality.
- Access to and quality of basic household services, including water and sanitation, housing and energy.
- Ownership of household goods.
- Household involvement in agricultural activities.
“Information will be treated as confidential and the workers may not discuss the information with any unauthorised person,” says Dibakwane.
“We value the trust placed in us by our respondents and assure them that any breach of this trust by our officials will be dealt with seriously.”
Another survey, a South Africa Demographic and Health Survey, will be completed between May and September and will be done in collaboration with the Department of Health and the South African Medical Research Council.
