RIP Dr Kemp

Doctor Donald 'Hoppy' Kemp (78), a well-known paediatrician, died on April 15 after a short illness.

He was born in Springs and attended Springs Boys High School.

After completing his B.Sc degree at the University of the Witwatersrand, he returned to Springs Boys High as a mathematics and science teacher.

However, his passion was always to become a doctor and he returned to the University of the Witwatersrand where he completed his medical degree in 1968.

He practised as a general practitioner for several years in Brakpan, prior to furthering his studies as a paediatrician when he started a paediatric practice in Springs, where he remained until retirement.

Upon retirement he became involved in HIV medicine, working at the various clinics on the East Rand until the time of his death.

Hoppy was a family- and community-orientated person who always put the needs of others before his own.

He was a devoted Christian and endeavoured to display these qualities throughout his life.

His love for service to others led him to become involved in the Rotary Club of Springs Park to enable him to better serve the community, for which he was honoured with the Paul Harris Fellowship award.

Hoppy leaves behind his wife, Pat Kemp, son Michael Kemp and daughter Beverley, and her husband Sean Selkon, his daughter-in-law Bonny and grandchildren, Steven, Graeme, Matthew and Duncan.

“We as a family were blessed to know such a wonderful man and will treasure the time we shared with Hoppy forever,” says Sean.
