Man dies after u-turn on Wit Road
An elderly man died after a truck collided with his Ford Ranger bakkie on Wit Road near the N17 on-ramp in Nuffield at 10.15am.
A 76-year-old man from Potchefstroom, who was headed in the direction of Springs along Wit Road, allegedly made a u-turn in front of a truck. The truck hit the bakkie on the driver’s side.
Capt Johannes Ramphora, the Springs police spokesman, witnessed the accident and says the truck driver hooted to try and warn the driver of the bakkie but couldn’t swerve to prevent impact.
As soon Ramphora realised what had happened, he stopped at the scene and alerted the necessary authorities.

“I was deeply shocked at the event unfolding before my eyes,” he says.
The truck driver was too traumatised to comment.
Paramedics removed the deceased from the vehicle and applied cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in an attempt to save his life.

The man was declared dead at the scene.
Trauma chaplain Andy Andrews was called to the scene and contacted the deceased’s son.
“I did not want to discuss his father’s death on the phone and asked him to come to the scene,” says Andrews.
The deceased’s son arrived on the scene and was immediately counselled by Andrews.
