‘I want to do a handstand’

The Addie chatted to Danny Painter, morning drive show presenter at East Rand Stereo, about her goals for the fitness challenge between her and afternoon presenter Herman Human.

The two started training at the start of the year and will face each other in a fitness test at the end of June.

Trainer: George Stander.
Charity: Springs SPCA.
Starting weight: 110.6kg.

Weight goal: I started off wanting to be thin but that’s not the goal any more.
If I can feel comfy in clothes, wherever I end up, however that looks or what that is numerically, I’ll be fine with that.
George would like to see me get down to 75kg but I just want to be healthy and active.

Goals: I have never done a handstand, so that is one of my first goals, to do my first handstand.
We also realised that I am naturally strong, so I’d like to enter a strength competition sometime this year.
That is something that has come out of this that I never knew I could do, and it’s really exciting because I never knew I could ‘sport’.
I just want to be healthy.

Dislikes: I hate working out. I really hate it.
Every day I fight it and after three weeks I still don’t enjoy it.
However, the most difficult thing for me is the diet.
Added to that, I’m not allowed wine (which was the worst thing to give up), pizza and milk.
A cup of black coffee or green tea is a meal – I get to eat green tea.

Likes: I’m really excited about a new wardrobe.

I enjoy the after-effects of the workout.

Once you leave the gym you feel amazing.
Everyone at the gym is very supportive and keep telling me they know I’ll win, so that makes me feel better.
Challenges: The fasting is very difficult and I think it’s unfair and I actually get cross.
There are no cheat meals.
I have cheated, but I got a dressing down from George and I nearly cried, so I have promised to be good now and stick to the diet.
I’ve been told from this week it’s boot camp.
I felt I couldn’t support animals and keep eating them, so I have given up meat for this challenge, which is difficult and makes meals very dull.
The lighter side: Once the workout is done, getting my bra off is the most difficult thing.
I’ve had days that I had to ask for help to get my sports bra off.
If you’ve never been sore and stiff and had to take off a sweaty sports bra, be thankful, because no kind of bondage is stronger.
You really have to find someone to help you take it off, and not in a sexy way.
