Metro fixes sewage leak after six months

Springs resident Zithule Mpange (49) was very pleased with the metro's quick reaction after he reported a water and sewage leak to the metro offices on Thursday.

On Friday, metro’s water and sanitation department employees arrived with the necessary tools to fix the problem.

The problem started at the manhole on the corner of Springs West and Nigel roads, Selection Park.

Mpange claims the problem started in September and since then he has followed the right channels to report the problem, but to no avail.

“I couldn’t even open my garage door as the sewage pushed up into the garage,” he says.

Claiming the smell was unbearable, he also complained about the time it took the metro to finally investigate the problem.

“I have been reporting the problem for six months and their lack of response is unacceptable as water and sewage leaks should take priority,” says Mpange.

He eventually asked one of his neighbours to assist him in reporting the matter.

The fact that the sewage and water were leaking onto the pavement meant it blocked the pathway of pedestrians.

“They had to walk in the street as the pavement was totally soaked with sewage,” he says.

Ina Edwards (46), a neighbour, says she continuously reported the matter to try and assist Mpange.

“We felt sorry for the pedestrians, but I also felt sorry for my neighbour as the sewage overflow pushed up into his garage.

“The smell was unbearable,” she says.

However, she is happy that the metro fixed the problem on Friday morning.
