Ekurhuleni water restrictions lifted, community urged to still use sparingly

Water restrictions in Ekurhuleni have officially been lifted, with a plea to the community to still use water sparingly.

Thema Gadebe, spokesman for the Ekurhuleni Metro, says the decision was confirmed during a council meeting last week.

“This confirmation follows the gazetted notice by the National Department of Water and Sanitation to lift water restrictions in Gauteng, after improved water levels at the Vaal Dam,” says Gadebe.

“Although water restrictions have been lifted, we urge residents and businesses to conserve water by avoiding daytime irrigation, between 7am and 5pm every day.

“When we water during the day, 40% of water evaporates due to sunlight.”

The lifting of the water restrictions also brings an end to the water restrictions punitive tariffs.

The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Nomvula Mokonyane, announced the lifting of water restrictions in Gauteng on February 26, following the sharp rise in dam levels as a result of torrential rains.

She says water restrictions in other provinces would remain in place and be reviewed on a case-by-case basis with the affected municipalities but warns the rain does not mean an end to the country’s water woes.
