Protest brought under control without violence
Police control protest at police station.
A group of about 50 people marched to the Springs Police Station in protest of a suspect’s death after he was arrested for possession of drugs on Tuesday.
They gathered in Third Street, CBD this morning (Wednesday) and marched to the police station.
According to SAPS spokesperson Capt Johannes Ramphora the police were alerted to the march when they received social media messages about the march.
“Our speedy response ensured the group was dispersed,” says Ramphora.
He says some of the men marching were armed with pangas and stones.
The suspect (age unknown) was arrested for possession of drugs in East Geduld at 11.40am, on Tuesday.
“At the time of the arrest the suspect gave the officers information on a friend, who is allegedly selling drugs in Springs Extension,” says Ramphora.
They were on the way to this friend’s house when, according to Ramphora, the man’s body started shaking.
The EMPD officers rushed him to the Springs Fire Station to get medical assistance.
However, it was too late as paramedics declared the man dead on the scene.
More information will follow when it becomes available.
