Sexual offences top the list in Springs

Springs had the fourth highest contact sexual offences rate in the annual crime statistics in Gauteng which were released on Tuesday.

Statistics are issued for the financial year from April 2016 to April 2017.

Contact sexual offences increased by eight.

However, there was a 43.8 per cent decrease in reported murder cases.

Springs had a decrease of 37 in robbery cases and 10 in house robbery cases but is still listed in the 25th spot for these crimes in the national top 30 police stations.

Statistics are as follow:

• Armed robbery decreased by 37.

• Assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm increased by 6.

• Assault increased by 67.

• Attempted murder decreased by 33.

• Business robbery increased by 69.

• Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs increased by 47.

• Drug-related crime increased by 99.

• Hijacking decreased by 10.

• House robbery increased by 118.

• Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition decreased by 19.

• Malicious damage to property increased by 21.

• Murder decreased by 35.

• Rape decreased by 19.

• Robbery decreased by 3.

Despite numerous attempts to get comment from the police, nothing was forthcoming at the time of publishing.
