Springs stalwart Ueli Hiller sells German TV

Ueli plans to enjoy his retirement in Springs.

Ueli Hiller has sold German TV after 44 years.

He was born in Ceres in Switzerland in 1949 and came to SA in 1973.

When he showed interest in immigrating to SA, an acquaintance who ran a restaurant in Switzerland gave him his brother’s details in South Africa.

The man who would become his father-in-law, Otto Bolliger, was an electrician and owned a chicken farm in Springs.

He met his wife, Bolliger’s daughter, Sylvia shortly after arriving and they married in 1974.

Ueli says he came to South Africa because it was easy.

“South Africa made it easy for immigrants to come to the country,” he says, adding “my father-in-law lived in the country so I knew people here.”

Ueli started Swiss TV in 1974 on the corner of Sixth Avenue and Second Street.

In 1976, the business moved to Second Avenue and they moved again in 1984 to the old Lloyd and de Vries building, also in Second Street.

Swiss TV became the first agency for MultiChoice and then it became German TV.

Ueli says he wants to retire while he is still young enough to enjoy retirement.

“Springs has been good to me and I will stay in Springs until I am no longer alive.”

Ueli is a member of the Rotary Club of Springs Park and is a past president.

He says he will continue with Rotary and many other projects.

Ueli was also involved in the amalgamation of Veritas College and Springs Convent where his three children Andrea Makings, Michelle Hiller and Martin Hiller attended school.

“I appreciate the support of Springs people throughout the years and I hope they will carry on supporting German TV,” says Ueli.
