Readers complain about horrible smell hanging over Nuffield
All of them agree that the smell it unbearable and the intensity of it differs during the day.
Residents of Selcourt, Edelweiss and Casseldale and readers of The Addie have noticed a strange smell hanging over the Nuffield area.
Motorists driving on Wit Road also say they have smelt the strange smell.
What they cannot agree on is what it smells like.
Yvonne Puren says it’s gas, to Estelle Coetzee it smells like antibiotics and Sharon Lass thinks it smells like oil.
All of them agree the smell it unbearable and the intensity of it differs during the day.
Why hasn’t the metro investigated this problem you may ask.
Well, the metro says they were not aware of it.
When asked how the metro ensures the emissions released by the factories in the area meet the agreed upon standards, spokesperson Themba Gadebe says the metro uses mobile air quality monitors where there are no ambient air quality monitoring stations.
“Reports by members of the public are also another way of detecting violations.
“Appropriate action where necessary is taken proportionate to the complaint recorded or violation found,” says Gadebe.
Gadebe goes on to say there are no ambient monitoring stations in the Nuffield area, but should the need arise for ambient air quality monitoring, a mobile air quality monitoring station will be stationed in the area.
In the meantime, the public must lodge their complaints at the metro call centre on 0860 543 000.
