Sewage problems in Awengloed

“We can’t live with this smell and some of us can’t even flush our toilets anymore, it all just comes back up,” says de Lange.

Residents of Awengloed have a massive sewage problem.

Awengloed is a municipal housing project for retired and elderly residents.

Resident Susan de Lange says the problem started on Saturday, when sewage flooded into the streets and surrounded some of the housing units.

De Lange says she and the assistant caretaker, Annie Joosten, phoned the metro multiple times at their call centre, but none of their calls went through.

When they were finally able to get through later in the day on Saturday, they were told that contractors would be sent out to assess the situation on Sunday, but nobody showed up.

Some of the lots have their backdoors blocked due to the amount of sewage that has spilled out.

De Lange says she fears that residents could become ill or that they could fall and injure themselves.

“We can’t live with this smell and some of us can’t even flush our toilets anymore, it all just comes back up,” says de Lange.

The metro failed to respond to our enquiries.
