Make Springs a city of recyclers
You can help to create a generation of recyclers in Springs.

If you missed the deadline to submit your entry for the Springs Advertiser / Veritas recycling competition, we have good news for you.
The competition has been extended to the end of September to give schools and learners more time to join this project to encourage Springs residents to recycle on a regular basis.
The competition is open to learners from Grade Four to Eleven at Springs schools.
The judging of the competition will take place in October.

How it works:
• The competition will be judged in two sections – a primary/junior school section and a high/secondary school section.
• The competition is open to learners in Grade Four to 11 and schools may enter one team per grade.
• Each team will include four learners who will work together to complete the assigned project.
• Each school will be assigned a different country by the Springs Advertiser and the school must then decide what part of the country each grade will highlight.
• Junior school (Grade Four to Seven) teams will have to do a short research project on a particular building or landmark in the assigned country and build a model of the building out of copies of the Springs Advertiser.
• The choice of building or landmark is up to the team, as long as no two teams from the same school choose the same building.
• For example, if your school is given China, each grade would showcase a different building and the school will have four buildings on display at the judging.
• The school might, therefore, choose to highlight the Great Wall of China, The Summer Palace, The Palace Museum and Emperor Qinshihuang’s Mausoleum Site Museum, to showcase four different landmarks in China.
• To meet the project requirement, the team must write a short history of the building and its significance to the country.
• This must include (where applicable) the name of the structure, when it was built, what its original purpose was, what it is used for today, if and when it was declared a national heritage site and if and when it was declared a Unesco site.
• Include 10 to 15 interesting facts about the structure and its history.
• Information should be typed up and stuck to an A2 sheet of cardboard along with photos of some of the dates in history highlighted in the written report.
• Senior school (Grade Eight to 11) teams will have to design and model fashion in the style of the assigned country to be worn by a model or models at the judging.
• Each grade will choose a different historical period to model their clothes on.
• All clothes and accessories must be made out of old copies of the paper and at least one member of the team will model the outfit created.
• Colour may be applied to building models and outfits if desired.
Entering
• There is an entry fee of R80 per team (R20 per learner) and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Vita Nova and iThemba Pregnancy Crisis Centre.
• To enter, complete the entry form and submit it, together with your entry fee, to Christina Radebe at the Springs Advertiser.
• Please tell her is for the environmental challenge.
• Entries close on September 27.
• Details of how and where to display your work will be given closer to the time.
• The winning team in each section will be awarded the Springs Advertiser Environmental Challenge Cup.
Note: While we will try to accommodate your favoured country, if more than one school asks for the same country we will assign countries on a first come, first served basis.
