Seven schools from Springs and KwaThema were selected as winners of the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition and will use their prize to improve school facilities.
The seven schools each won a building material voucher to the value of R15 000, which was handed out at the opening ceremony of the refurbished Cashbuild Springs store on Friday.
The competition requires learners to submit their best artwork to the building materials chain.
This artwork is displayed at the ceremony and remains on display in the store for the next six years.
Artwork was judged and three winners from each school were named.

Winners received gold, silver and bronze certificates for first, second and third place respectively.
The Manager’s Choice Award was also presented to the overall winner of the artwork competition, Helene Brits from Laerskool Selectionpark.
This award was announced on the day and Brits received a stationary pack and a trophy.
Brits was also given the honour of officially opening the refurbished store.
The Springs schools which benefited from Cashbuild Art-at-Heart vouchers are Laerskool PAM Brink, Laerskool Selectionpark, Laerskool Christiaan Beyers, Pinegrove Primary School, Vukucinge Primary School, Phelang Special School and Nkumbulo Secondary School.
A teacher from Nkumbulo Secondary, Sibusiso Mhlambi, says: “The R15 000 will make a huge difference to the school.
“I am 139.9 per cent happy and very grateful to the store.”
Grant Crossley, the store manager, says: “We were celebrating the store revamp, so we chose local schools to receive the R15 000 vouchers.
“We had an arts competition where schools entered and we chose winners.
“This function today was to celebrate schools, and for the first time we invited a special school.”

A teacher from Laerskool Christiaan Beyers, Chené Hendrych, says: “The money is going to help us a lot as a school because it takes a while for the department to fix the school for us, so this came at the right time.”
Ward 74 Clr Thulane Simelane says he is thankful to the store as they are supporting schools and are able to assist schools with fixing them while schools are still waiting for government to access funds.
During the opening ceremony of the refurbished Springs store, when the vouchers were handed out to the seven winning schools, learners from the various schools entertained the guests with singing, cultural dancing and theatrical performances.
These groups were judged by teachers from other schools and Laerskool Selectionpark won a certificate for the best-dressed school, Vukucinge Primary won for the most entertaining school and Phelang Special School won for the best-performing school.
