Residents frustrated by Sassa
Schoeman says she is at her wits' end because she can't work and SASSA is not helping her.
Residents have been left frustrated by the lack of service from the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa).
Kim Schoeman, who suffers from severe epilepsy, says she applied for her disability grant but was turned down.
“I then appealed their decision in March and they were supposed to get back to me within 90 days, but I haven’t heard from them since.
“I appealed because my seizures are not under control, so I can’t work.
“Some of my medication is out of stock and the clinic wrote me a letter saying that the Sassa doctor just dismissed me and said I don’t qualify for a disability grant,” says Schoeman.

In a separate incident, Zakhele Dlangalala says he went to Sassa to apply for a child grant for his child and was turned away three times.
“When I first arrived at Sassa on August 15, I was told by security that child application grants are only done on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
“I went back on August 21 and was told by security they can’t help me as all the staff are in a meeting.
“When I went back on August 23, I was again told by the security they can’t help me because there are only three staff members in the office as all the staff were at a funeral.
“I was shocked that just because everybody has gone to a funeral, nobody can help me,” says Dlangalala.
