Here are some safety tips from the district manager media liaison of emergency services, William Ntladi.

• Try and find shelter as soon as possible if you hear thunder.

• The best place to be is inside the car or well-constructed buildings – windows should be closed.

• Avoid open areas such as picnic areas.

• Stay away from trees; thunder strikes tall objects.

• Stay out of water as it is a good conductor of electricity.

• Avoid playing outdoors.
