End to hyacinth problem in sight

New hyacinth-removing machine deployed at Blesbokspruit

The City of Ekurhuleni’s newly purchased amphibious excavator has made notable progress in clearing lakes and dams of the invasive hyacinth problem.
The amphibious excavator has now been deployed to the Blesbokspruit in Springs, which is essential to many bird species that use it as a stop during their migration season.

Additionally, many dams in Springs such as Presidents Dam have been rendered unusable for recreational activities as the majority of their surfaces have been covered with hyacinth.
Furthermore, the City’s use of chemicals such as herbicides to control water hyacinth has proven to be highly effective during the summer season when the plants are active.
