• ‘It’s not for us’, says fire officials
Angry Springs Fire Department officials have lashed out at their Johannesburg co-workers this week for contacting Springs companies to collect money for a golf day.
Confusion has arisen as a result of these calls as many people simply assumed that it was the Springs Fire Department looking for funds.
The last straw came when Springs Town councillor Johan Murray also received a call from Johannesburg residents on Wednesday, asking him for a contribution.
According to Piet Snyders, divisional officer at the Springs Fire Department, many businesses have been contacted in connection with donations and many people are under the misconception.
He adds that this has been occurring for two months.

• Local pilot receives helicopter licence
It took Mark Hall only seven months to get his private pilot’s licence for helicopters.
It’s been a very expensive seven months, but worthwhile as it’s been his dream to fly helicopters since he was a young boy.
The helicopters he flies are a Robinson R22 and a Bell Jet Ranger.
The 29-year-old was based at Rand Airport while he completed his licence under the guidance of instructor Buzz Bezuidenhout, SA helicopter champion for the third year running.
Learning to fly a helicopter is a very expensive endeavor.
To get the license, Mark spent approximately R43 000.
For a commercial licence he would have to pay a further R100 000.
Mark had to fly a minimum of 50 hours to get the licence.
In January he hopes to continue with his commercial licence which will require him to fly a minimum of 150 hours if he follows the course approved by the Department of Civil Aviation or 200 if he wants to do extra.
“Flying helicopters is definitely more exciting than planes.
“You can do whatever you want, but the best part by far is hovering,” said Hall.
