The Senior Citizen Group from the Jesus is Light Church held their annual hat competition last Saturday at PJs Nursery in Dersley Park.
The participants had free reign as to the hat’s design and decoration as there was no set theme for the contest.
The contest has been running for the past four years and there were 20 participants who entered this year.

“All our elderly people are very creative so we like to keep them busy.
“We asked them to make a hat with things they had lying around the house,” said organising committee member Louise Oberholster.

Most of the participants went with a spring theme and decorated their hats with flowers.
Bets van der Merwe, whose hat was an open rose, said she Googled how to make her hat and worked her way from there.
Others drew inspiration from their favourite Bible verses or their daily lives.

The Senior Citizen Group’s activities has been severely hampered this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We are having our annual Christmas party on the first Saturday of December and we’re appealing for donations for group members.

“We haven’t been able to do our regular fund-raising because of all the Covid-19 regulations,” said Oberholster.
Those who would like to donate can contact Oberholster on 083 320 3728.
