Payneville housing project on track
City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, said so far more than 200 locals have been employed in the construction of the houses.
The Payneville Extension Three Development project is on track to meet its June 2022 completion deadline.
The project has been in the works for quite some time and has hit a few hiccups along the way.
The original plan was for the metro to construct toilets and then move the residents from Gugulethu and Everest informal settlements there. However, these residents would still be living in shacks.
The City built over 1 000 toilets over three years before work stopped on the development.

The toilets were vandalised and eventually demolished after a court case between the City of Ekurhuleni and developers who were against the project.
Seeing what was happening, residents in the area despaired of ever seeing their dream of having a home come true.
In 2015, Nkosinathi Luthuli told the paper it had been three years he’s been waiting to be moved to a better place.
“It seems like my dream of escaping from the informal settlement to a developed area is slowly dying,” said Luthuli.

The project was eventually amended to building RDP houses, instead of just toilets.
In the 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 financial years, the City allocated funds to begin work on the new development and by August 2017, the City started with the construction of roads and stormwater infrastructure.
Building of the actual houses last year and so far, the City has completed 60 units.
At the end of construction, there will be 247 units completed.
City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said so far more than 200 locals have been employed in the construction of the houses.
Given what happened to the previous development in the area, Dlamini said the City has security on site to guard the houses.
